OF THE DISSERTATION Wireless Networks in Non-Ergodic Multipath Fading: Capacity and Relaying Performance Analysis by Yoav Nebat Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical Engineering (Communication Theory and Systems) University of California, San Diego, 2007 Professor Laurence B. Milstein, Chair Professor Rene L. Cruz, Co-Chair Wireless channels experience random multipath fading. Reliable and efficient communication in slow-varying channel fading conditions may be challenging due to limited time diversity. This problem may be alleviated by leveraging network path diversity, which is a form of distributed spatial diversity. Utilization of relays and node cooperation in wireless communication have been proposed in recent years to achieve a certain level of spatial diversity. Cooperative diversity is mostly needed when other sources of diversity, namely frequency diversity, time diversity and conventional spatial diversity, are limited. Under such conditions, the coherence time of the channel is likely to be sufficiently large to allow local channel state information to

Ergodic Capacity of Dual-hop Semi-blind AF Relaying over Composite Fading Channels using Mixture Gamma Distribution

Since the performance metrics of digital communication systems over composite multipath/ lognormal fading channels is intractable, a mixture gamma (MG) fading model is used to approximate Nakagami-lognormal (NL) fading model. By using MG fading model, the ergodic capacity of dualhop semi-blind amplify-and-forward relaying systems is investigated over independent non-identical composite NL fadin...

Dual-hop Fixed Gain Relaying Transmissions with Semi-Blind in Asym- metric Multipath/Shadowing Fading Channels

In this paper, we investigate the end-to-end performance of a dual-hop fixed gain relaying system with semiblind relay under asymmetric fading environments. In such environments, the wireless links of the considered system undergo asymmetric multipath/shadowing fading conditions, where one link is subject to only the Nakagami-m fading, the other link is subject to the composite Nakagami-lognorm...

On the Ergodic Capacity of Underlay Cognitive Dual-Hop AF Relayed Systems Under Non-Identical Generalized-K Fading Channels

The ergodic capacity of underlay cognitive (secondary) dual-hop relaying systems is analytically investigated. Specifically, the amplify-and-forward transmission protocol is considered, while the received signals undergo multipath fading and shadowing with non-identical statistics. To efficiently describe this composite type of fading, the well-known generalized-K fading model is used. New anal...

Dual-hop variable gain relaying in mixed multipath/shadowing fading channels

In this paper, we investigated the end-to-end performance of a dual-hop variable gain relaying system over mixed fading environment. In such environment, the wireless links of relaying system undergo different fading conditions, where one link is subject to the Nakagami-m fading, the other link is subject to the composite Nakagami-lognormal fading which is approximated by using mixture gamma fa...

Performance Analysis of Wireless Cooperative Networks with Iterative Incremental Relay Selection

In this paper, an iterative incremental relay selection (IIRS) scheme is considered for wireless cooperative networks in order to increase the reliability of transmission. Different from the conventional incremental relay selection which incrementally selects a best relay for only one iteration; the IIRS scheme iteratively applies the incremental relaying and relay selection processes. To evalu...
